Grandparent rights in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania grandparents who wish to protect their legal right to have access to their grandchildren may find that the courts support their cause. Some form of grandparent visitation is allowed by every state, and there are even certain times when grandparents have the right to request that they be awarded primary custody.

Student debt can follow a spouse beyond divorce

Student loans are great tools for helping individuals to achieve their educational and professional dreams. However, large obligations can be among some of the most serious areas of dispute in a marriage. Pennsylvania residents are not subject to the same terms as those living in community property states in the event of divorce. The state's use of equitable distribution, however, may lead to some continuing student loan obligations after a marriage ends.

Child support portal offers efficiency to employers, agencies

In 2017, employers in Pennsylvania and around the country will have access to a child support portal that should make gathering and sharing information between employers and child support enforcement agencies at the federal and state levels easier and more efficient. Using the system, employers can provide needed identification and contact information to agencies. Communication and correspondence will also be more efficient.

Baby boomers divorcing with increasing frequency

According to research conducted by the National Center for Family and Marriage Research, the rate of divorce among baby boomers more than doubled between 1990 and 2010. Pennsylvania couples who divorce later in life face special issues regarding income and finances. A recent survey of 56,000 women showed that older women who divorce are often at a particular disadvantage. The study found that women who divorce late in life are more likely to have full-time jobs between the ages of 50 and 74.
