Stevie J facing back child support trial

On Behalf of | May 26, 2016 | Child Support |

Someone behind on child support in Pennsylvania might feel better after learning that hip hop star Stevie J must go to court for allegedly being $1.1 million behind on payments. He attempted to have his prosecution deferred to avoid a trial, but the request was denied.

Although he is facing a court date, he remains positive about his family situation. Quotes attributed to him revealed that he had attended a Bad Boy concert with his children. Their mother was also in attendance, and everyone reportedly got along well.

He has a son, 18, and a daughter, 17. His legal problems stem from failing to meet his original child support payment plan. To cover expenses for both children, he had agreed to pay $8,557 every month. As of 2014, he owed more than $1 million.

When a person has trouble meeting child support payments, the penalties can be severe. The other parent might take actions to collect that could include the garnishment of wages or liens on property. In some cases, the failure to pay what has been ordered can lead to jail time. While some parents simply refuse to pay out of spite, others may be genuinely unable to due to an adverse change in financial circumstances, such as a medical emergency or an unexpected job loss. In such an event, it can be advisable to have legal assistance in seeking a modification of the order from the court having jurisdiction. If granted, however, the modification will be prospective only and will have no effect on any payments that are in arrears.
