Fans of the popular television crime drama series “Gotham” may want to know more about a legal settlement that has been reached by actress Morena Baccarin and screenwriter, actor and producer Austin Chick. On Jan. 9, media sources reported that, after a two-year custody battle, the two will jointly share both legal and physical custody of their 4-year-old son until he reaches the age of 18.

In September 2015, Baccarin moved her son to her home in New York with the permission of the court. Two months later, she was ordered to make monthly payments to her ex-husband of $20,349 in spousal support and $2,693 in support of their minor child, according to court papers. In the more recent settlement, the 38-year-old actress has agreed to pay spousal support in the amount of $5,000 per month until Dec. 31, 2018. Baccarin has also agreed to pay $3,500 per month in child support.

The child will live primarily with his mother, who will retain ownership of properties in Los Angeles and Brazil. Chick, who will be moving permanently to New York City at the end of the school year, will keep the New York home. The ex-spouses have also agreed to split the residuals for some Baccarin’s acting projects.

Parents who find themselves facing a child custody or support dispute may find it beneficial to seek legal counsel. The lawyer may be able to assist the client in negotiating an agreement that is in the child’s best interests and that could ultimately spare the parties a lengthy and divisive court battle.
