Actor Terrence Howard says he is unable to pay spousal support

Pennsylvania residents who are facing divorce may want to be sure they are forthcoming about their finances so that they do not end up in the position of actor Terrence Howard. Howard has requested a change in the spousal support he has been ordered to pay to his ex-wife Michelle Ghent. According to Howard, he cannot pay the $325,000 he agreed to because his income is less than $6,000 per month.

Social media useful for building cases against deadbeat parents

Pennsylvania parents may not be aware that parents and attorneys are starting to use social media to uncover deadbeat parents who try to avoid paying support for their children. For example, officials in Milwaukee County, Wis., say they have been using the popular social media site Facebook to find out whether parents are choosing not to pay child support or genuinely lack the funds.

What to do with a home in divorce

For some Pennsylvania couples who are going through divorce, property division is simple and straightforward. When the couple rents a home, there's no concern about dividing the property. The couple can find separate places to live once the lease runs out. However, when a couple owns a home together, there may be more of a challenge posed. In rare cases, a couple with the means to do so may retain joint ownership of the home and sell it when the market seems ideal. However, it's commonplace for one member of the couple to buy out the other's half of the home. The home can also be sold and the profits split.

Consideration of retirement accounts in divorce settlements

As Pennsylvania residents who follow social trends know, the American divorce rate for older couples has jumped from mere 2 percent of divorced individuals 50 and over in 1960 to between 11 and 15 percent in 2010. This age-specific evolution changes the asset dynamics of a divorce. Retirement accounts are an increasingly important part of asset division. In one study, almost one-third of divorcing adults were unaware they could claim part of their spouse's retirement account and did not do so.

Judge orders Frank McCourt's ex-wife to pay his attorney fees

The ongoing legal battle between former Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and his ex-wife may be of interest to Pennsylvania residents. In a recent court decision, McCourt's ex-wife has been ordered to pay legal fees totaling $1.9 million after an unsuccessful attempt to contest her divorce settlement. The judge's decision was reportedly in accordance with provisions in the ex-spouses' high-asset divorce settlement.
