Business owners and divorce

When couples in Pennsylvania divorce, financial concerns are quite common. Issues to be decided during the divorce often involve the division of assets, including real estate and retirement plans, as well as the negotiation of both spousal and child support. When one or both spouses own a business, however, this aspect of ending a marriage can become quite complex.

How to alter a child support order

Parents in Pennsylvania are typically required to support their children until they reach the age of majority. In the event of a divorce, the noncustodial parent may be required to make child support payments to the custodial parent. However, it is possible for a custodial parent to either ask that support be terminated or return payments to the noncustodial parent.

Helping children cope with divorce

Pennsylvania parents who are ending their marriage can behave in certain ways that may help make it less difficult for their children. They should avoid arguing in front of their children and should avoid making negative remarks about the other parent in front of the child. Instead, they should try to be positive about the child's interactions with that parent.

Preventing an international child abduction

The possibility of an international child abduction may be a concern for Pennsylvania parents who are going through a divorce from someone who has foreign ties. While the Hague Convention governs parental international child abductions, not every country is a signatory to it. Furthermore, even when a country is a signatory, the process of returning the child to the United States may still be a lengthy one involving negotiations.
