Why have a family meeting for the divorce conversation?

On Behalf of | Aug 28, 2024 | Divorce |

You will eventually need to sit down with your children and talk about the divorce. This isn’t something you want to do haphazardly. It’s best if you plan it out.

It’s also wise to have a family meeting when this conversation eventually happens. Both you and your spouse should be there, even if you’re not on the best of terms because you’re getting divorced. If you have children, they should all be there together. Why is it important that this happens as a family?

The children find out at the same time

From the kids’ perspective, this is important because they’re all going to find out about the divorce at once. One child isn’t going to learn about it from their sibling. They’re not going to overhear people talking about it in another room. It’s much better if they can get the news directly from you as a parent so that you can answer questions and offer reassurance.

You and your ex are a united front

From your perspective, it’s important to do this together because you and your ex should try to create a united front and focus on the future. Odds are that you are going to share physical custody of your children. You will both still be involved in their lives, and they deserve to know that. You also want to reassure them that you love them and will always be there for them, even after your marriage ends.

Getting a divorce

Talking to your children about the divorce is just one step to take. As you get this process underway, be sure you know about your child custody rights and all of your legal options.
